Confessions II: the queen of pop is back on top

The hype began in New York’s Times Square when it was transformed into a giant dance floor of 50,000 people to preview Madonna's new track “Love Sensation”. Then came a star-studded short film for the pop queen's dance album Confessions II (released 3rd July). As that album debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200 in the US and also hit the top of the UK Official Album Charts, Madonna became the first US female artist in history to achieve No. 1 albums across all five decades.

The singer has joined The Beatles, Taylor Swift and Drake as the only artists ever to secure at least 10 No.1s on both the Billboard 200 and the Hot 100. She is now tying Elvis Presley on the all-time Billboard leaderboard, and has surpassed the rock-and-roll legend in the UK – she has the fifth most No.1 albums in the country's history.

Confessions II is feel-good dance euphoria, and we're here for it. The first three singles "Bring Your Love" with Sabrina Carpenter; "Love Sensations"; and "Danceteria," are classic Madonna meets banging club anthem.

The tracks were introduced by Confessions II – The Film, a short featuring the first six songs on the album. The tunes dissolve into each other through six chapters, which take the viewer on a wild night out with the singer. It’s pure escapism into club-land and scenes inspired by Danceteria, the New York club that helped shape Madonna’s early creative life and career.

A roll-call of famous faces become part of the fantasy: Kate Moss joins the dream fever as does Arca, Benedict Cumberbatch, Cole Palmer, Debi Mazar, Honey Dijon, Joao Pedro, Richard E. Grant and Shygirl.

Madonna’s 10-minute-plus fantasy is directed by Torso, the filmmaking duo David Toro and Solomon Chase, who are the industry's go-to for commercial, fashion and music videos, and also produced the film under the production company Division.

Dolce & Gabbana served as the film’s private fashion house, dressing the entire cast including 250 extras. Maverick and Warner Records also played a part, while Stuart Price oversaw the music direction. The film received several standing ovations at  the 25th Tribeca Film Festival.
